Azurite
Rubtsovskoe mine, Rudnyi Altai, Altaiskii Krai, Russia

These azurite nodules from Russia are what I call "instant classics." They are so beautiful, so outstanding for the species, and so instantly recognizable they belong in every collection. Unfortunately, we can't all have one...there just aren't that many! Mining has already progressed past the oxidization zone and no more are coming out. In addition, many, if not most, are being sliced open to reveal their geode-like interiors. Here is a whole nodule, measuring 4.5 x 3.8 x 3.0 cm.

Even though they just came out a few years ago, the mine has already dug past the azurite layer and no more will be coming.
