Wulfenite
Ojuela Mine, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico

This striking wulfenite specimen is from the famous Ojuela Mine in Mapimi, Durango, Mexico. The crystals look like little sandwiches of yellow-brown bread enclosing greenish brown peanut butter. You might think the darker parts of the crystal formed first, and then were surrounded by the lighter colored culfenite. Actually, the darker regions is an overgrowth only...it does not extended inside between the pieces of bread. This piece could be trimmed to remove the excess matrix on the left, but doing so would damage the crystals in the back of the piece. For now, I will leave it as is, preferring not to remove any of the geologic information from this remarkable specimen. There are not many of them on the market. I bought this one from a miner in Mexico when it was found (2017?). 11.5 x 4 x 3.5 cm with crystals to about 1 cm.
