Variscite Ribeirao Cascalheira, Mato Grosso, Brazil
I bought this piece from my good friends Carlos and Luiz Menezes some years ago. Luiz has since passed away but his wife, Luisa, and brother, Carlos, are both continuing the family business. Two dealers with whom I very much I enjoy doing business.
When I think of variscite, my mind immediately goes to the nodules from Utah. I DON'T think of crystals. That is why I like this specimen so much. It was a shock the first time I saw variscites as crystals...and such nice ones at that! I bought several from Luiz and Carlos, including, this, the biggest one they had. And even though it's only one centimeter across, it is one of the biggest from the find. No damage, with a cute small gemmy companion. 3 x 3 x 2.6 cm and the main crystal aggregate is 1.0 cm. Originally labelled as from Canarana, Mato Grosso, Brazil, but I believe the Ribeirao Cascalheira location is correct.
