Elbaite on Quartz Gillette Quarry, Haddam Neck, Connecticut, USA

In the 1990\'s, I was fortunate enough to get permission to collect in the Gillette Quarry four or five times. One afternoon, I opened a small pocket (by the way, there is nothing in rock collecting more thrilling than opening a pocket in a gem producing pegmatite!). The pocket started out as a small tube and opened into a hand sized bowl. The sides of the bowl were lined with smoky quartz crystals. The bottom of the bowl was littered with small elbaites. Most of the elbaites were broken and very few had terminations...I have never figured out where those terminations went! Unfortunately, I had no way to collect the whole pocket. I did my best to break plates of quartz crystals off the sides of the pocket, but all I got were loose quartz points. This is the best piece. Not all that great but I can still picture the way the pocket looked when I first opened it...
