Grossular and Diopside
VAG Quarry, Eden Mills, Vermont, USA

I met Bob Whitmore during one of my first trips to Eden Mills. He was leading a group of collectors attacking a promising vein in the quarry floor. Bob\\\'s crew had dug a pit the size of a bathrub that kept filling with water. No problem, they had a pump...which suddenly gave out. The \\\"bathtub\\\" filled with water very quickly. I jumped in with a 5 gallon bucket and began bailing it out. In the middle of all this activity, a rather elderly lady showed up with an INCREDIBLE green Christamas tree of diopside with three small red garnets attached to the front and one large garnet dead center on the back. Better than my dreams! In response to a flurry of questions from all sides, she said that the quarry workers used to dump large buckets full of good looking pocket material to one side for collectors. She had found that piece in the old pile! As I remember it, our entire group strung up the old lady and forced her to tell us where the pile was...or maybe she just volunteered the information. At any rate, the mad scramble was on. I found this piece in the pile that same day. It is 6 cm tall and the large garnet is 6 mm across.
