Sphalerite crystals
Elmwood District, Smith Co., Tennessee

This locality produces very distinctive sphalerite crystals that are crystallographically complex, lustrous, resinous, and slightly translucent with a brownish-red internal color. Usually the crystals are in intergrown beds, but this specimen is a fine example of an isolated twinned tetrahedral 3 x 3.5 x 4 cm, with a smaller single tetrahedron next to it. Completely undamaged and not contacted, it comes on a shard of the typical drusy quartz encrusted dolostone.
