Spessartine with Quartz crystals
Navegadora Mine, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

These naturally etched, super gemmy spessartine crystals are quite an oddity, and this example is even more so as the original crystal has been etched right through into at least 4 separate pieces. A close look at the largest remnants (22 and 17 mm long), and the 2 smaller pieces to their right, reveals that they all have parallel crystal faces, based on their common reflections. Other remnants are scattered around the pocket, some enclosed by clear quartz that apparently formed after the etching. Small muscovite and albite crystals also populate the void. The gemmy remnants are in perfect, undamaged condition and the entire piece measures 5 x 6 x 6 cm. The large loose crystals from this find are highly prized, but matrix examples are few and far between.
