Pyrargyrite on Quartz
San Jose Mining District, Oaxaca, Mexico

Silver pyrargyrite crystals, big and small, cover this plate of milky quartz. Most of the larger pyrargyrites are partial crystals, but in the center stands a perfect specimen of pyrargyrite measuring 1.5 cm tall. It is a sceptered crystal, with a tiny triangular section of the old termination sticking out the top (see the detail photo below). I would not know this if I had not had several other pieces exhibiting the same morphology. It is very hard to get any material from this locality, let along good matrix specimens. I really like the association with euhedral quartz. 8 x 6.5 x 5 cm.
