Rutilated Quartz
Minas Gerais, Brazil

This is a wonderful rutilated quartz. First of all, the rutiles are much thicker than the typical specimen. They are more like sticks than hairs. Second, the rutiles are aesthetically jumble-scattered throughout the piece and the quartz is optically clear, so you get a really good look. But what I like most of all are the "liquid metal" reflections off the rutiles at certain angles. It is just the light bounce back off the tubes in the quartz created by the rutile, but it is very dramatic and fun to see. You will get a hint of it in the movie, but it is much better in person! I have not seen this so well in any other piece. Some very minor chipping near the termination (you really need a hand lens to see it) and measuring 6.5 x 3.5 x 2.2 cm.
