Fluorite
Surprise Mine, Cooks Peak District, Luna Co., New Mexico

Mindat has very little information about the various mines and prospects in the Cooks Peak District, Luna County, New Mexico. I have not seen many specimens from here over the years. But at Denver two collectors showed me a few flats of wonderful material they had recently collected. I bought a few of the best miniatures, of which this is one.

This wonderful fluorite "couple" is completely undamaged, even on the bottom. Apparently the natural etching that gives these crystals their unique surface texture also liberated them from the matrix. The bottom edge of the larger crystal is 3 cm across, and the piece measures 4.3 x 3.0 x 3.0 cm. The octahedral crystals are actually overgrown on very light green cubic crystals. A wonderful that attracts attention to itself.
